How to COPE up with STRESS?

Stress

A lecturer when explaining stress management to an audience,
Raised a glass of water and asked
‘How heavy is this glass of water?’

Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g.

The lecturer replied, ‘The absolute weight doesn’t matter.
It depends on how long you try to hold it.
If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem..
If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my rightarm.
If I hold it for a day, you’ll have to call an ambulance.
In each case, it’s the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.’

He continued,
‘And that’s the way it is with stress management.
If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later,
As the burden becomes increasingly heavy,
We won’t be able to carry on. ‘

‘As with the glass of water,
You have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again..
When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden.’
‘So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down. Don’t carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow.

Whatever burdens you’re carrying now,
Let them down for a moment if you can.’
So, my friend, Put down anything that may be a burden to you right now. Don’t pick it up again until after you’ve rested a while.

Here are some great ways of dealing with the burdens of life:

* Accept that some days you’re the pigeon,
And some days you’re the statue.

* Always keep your words soft and sweet,
Just in case you have to eat them.

* Always wear stuff that will make you look good
If you die in the middle of it.

*Drive carefully. It’s not only cars that can be
“Recalled” by their maker.

* If you can’t be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

* If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again,
It was probably worth it.

* It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to be kind to others.

* Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time,
Because then you won’t have a leg to stand on.

* Nobody cares if you can’t dance well.
Just get up and dance.

* Since it’s the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late.

* The second mouse gets the cheese.

* When everything’s coming your way,
You’re in the wrong lane.

* Birthdays are good for you.
The more you have, the longer you live.

* You may be only one person in the world,
But you may also be the world to one person.

* Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

* We could learn a lot from crayons… Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box.

*A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

Have an awesome day and know that someone has thought about you today…I did …

Friendship like no other….

There were two boys who grew up together as best friends. As the years went by they went their separate ways. One had a good career and  became a judge. The other fell on hard times, got mixed up with the wrong company and became a thief. One day the judge realized that the man standing in the dock before him was none other than his old childhood friend who he had loved dearly. He had an awful dilemma. As a judge, he was bound to uphold the law. He knew that he had to serve the thief with a large fine. He also knew that his friend could not pay. If he didn’t pay, he would be condemned to prison…

The judge passed sentence, as he was bound to. But then, he stood down and took off his judge’s wigs and his gown. To the utter amazement of everyone else in the courtroom he joined his old friend in the dock, took out his chequebook and paid the fine on behalf of the man he loved. His friend was free to go. No fine, no prison sentence, no debt at all.

REFLECTION:

God is a just judge. He is also a merciful judge. He loves us so  that he offers a gesture of friendship to us, a friendship that even costs his own life for our sake…Let’s thank him for this great and unparalleled act of God.

6th Sunday in Ordinary time [READINGS]

First reading

Ecclesiasticus 15:16-21 ©

If you wish, you can keep the commandments,

to behave faithfully is within your power.

He has set fire and water before you;

put out your hand to whichever you prefer.

Man has life and death before him;

whichever a man likes better will be given him.

For vast is the wisdom of the Lord;

he is almighty and all-seeing.

His eyes are on those who fear him,

he notes every action of man.

He never commanded anyone to be godless,

he has given no one permission to sin.

Psalm

Psalm 118:1-2,4-5,17-18,33-34

Second reading

1 Corinthians 2:6-10 ©

We have a wisdom to offer those who have reached maturity: not a philosophy of our age, it is true, still less of the masters of our age, which are coming to their end. The hidden wisdom of God which we teach in our mysteries is the wisdom that God predestined to be for our glory before the ages began. It is a wisdom that none of the masters of this age have ever known, or they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory; we teach what scripture calls: the things that no eye has seen and no ear has heard, things beyond the mind of man, all that God has prepared for those who love him.

These are the very things that God has revealed to us through the Spirit, for the Spirit reaches the depths of everything, even the depths of God.

Gospel

Matthew 5:17-37 ©

Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Do not imagine that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to complete them. I tell you solemnly, till heaven and earth disappear, not one dot, not one little stroke, shall disappear from the Law until its purpose is achieved. Therefore, the man who infringes even one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be considered the least in the kingdom of heaven; but the man who keeps them and teaches them will be considered great in the kingdom of heaven.

‘For I tell you, if your virtue goes no deeper than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.

‘You have learnt how it was said to our ancestors: You must not kill; and if anyone does kill he must answer for it before the court. But I say this to you: anyone who is angry with his brother will answer for it before the court; if a man calls his brother “Fool” he will answer for it before the Sanhedrin; and if a man calls him “Renegade” he will answer for it in hell fire. So then, if you are bringing your offering to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar, go and be reconciled with your brother first, and then come back and present your offering. Come to terms with your opponent in good time while you are still on the way to the court with him, or he may hand you over to the judge and the judge to the officer, and you will be thrown into prison. I tell you solemnly, you will not get out till you have paid the last penny.

‘You have learnt how it was said: You must not commit adultery. But I say this to you: if a man looks at a woman lustfully, he has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye should cause you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; for it will do you less harm to lose one part of you than to have your whole body thrown into hell. And if your right hand should cause you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; for it will do you less harm to lose one part of you than to have your whole body go to hell.

‘It has also been said: Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a writ of dismissal. But I say this to you: everyone who divorces his wife, except for the case of fornication, makes her an adulteress; and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

‘Again, you have learnt how it was said to our ancestors: You must not break your oath, but must fulfil your oaths to the Lord. But I say this to you: do not swear at all, either by heaven, since that is God’s throne; or by the earth, since that is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, since that is the city of the great king. Do not swear by your own head either, since you cannot turn a single hair white or black. All you need say is “Yes” if you mean yes, “No” if you mean no; anything more than this comes from the evil one.’

Alternative gospel

Matthew 5:20-22,27-28,33-34,37 ©

‘You have learnt how it was said to our ancestors: You must not kill; and if anyone does kill he must answer for it before the court. But I say this to you: anyone who is angry with his brother will answer for it before the court.

Bishop Joe Grech’s prayer

Loving God

I thank you God for wanting me from eternity to become like you. Help me to always remember who I am. Help me to understand deep down within me that I am never alone. You are there with me. Help me to experience more and more your life-giving presence within me so that I will continue to be a powerful witness of your presence to those whom I meet. Help me to persevere and to understand that difficulties and problems are moments of growth and maturity rather than moments of discouragement and a reason to give up. Jesus gives us a heart that loves like you, feels like you, understands like you, thinks like you and behaves like you. Amen.

( Bishop Joe Grech: Homily 2010)

Another prayer of Bishop Joe

Lord Jesus,

I thank you for my life and for all the good qualities

that you have gifted me with.

I thank you for friendships, family life and for so many opportunities to grow.

I thank you for inviting me to walk closely with you and to continue

to proclaim and deepen what you stand for;

love, justice and peace.

Thank you for living with me through your Holy Spirit

and encouraging, loving, forgiving, healing and empowering me.

Touch my heart and renew me with your presence.

Fill me with joy.

Continue to mould and nurture me,

so that I will never be afraid to respond

to the needs of others and your world,

and to turn to you in times of difficulty and distress.

I trust you with my past life,

my present situation and with my future.

Today I decide again to accept you

and you alone as my God.

I truly desire to k now you better. Amen.
