4th Sunday of Advent Mass Readings

First reading Isaiah 7:10-14 ©
The Lord spoke to Ahaz and said, ‘Ask the Lord your God for a sign for yourself coming either from the depths of Sheol or from the heights above.’ ‘No,’ Ahaz answered ‘I will not put the Lord to the test.’
Then Isaiah said:
‘Listen now, House of David:
are you not satisfied with trying the patience of men
without trying the patience of my God, too?
The Lord himself, therefore,
will give you a sign.
It is this: the maiden is with child
and will soon give birth to a son
whom she will call Immanuel,
a name which means “God-is-with-us.”’

Psalm Psalm 23:1-6

Second reading Romans 1:1-7 ©
From Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus who has been called to be an apostle, and specially chosen to preach the Good News that God promised long ago through his prophets in the scriptures.
This news is about the Son of God who, according to the human nature he took was a descendant of David: it is about Jesus Christ our Lord who, in the order of the spirit, the spirit of holiness that was in him, was proclaimed Son of God in all his power through his resurrection from the dead. Through him we received grace and our apostolic mission to preach the obedience of faith to all pagan nations in honour of his name. You are one of these nations, and by his call belong to Jesus Christ. To you all, then, who are God’s beloved in Rome, called to be saints, may God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ send grace and peace.

Gospel Matthew 1:18-24 ©
This is how Jesus Christ came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph; but before they came to live together she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph; being a man of honour and wanting to spare her publicity, decided to divorce her informally. He had made up his mind to do this when the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because she has conceived what is in her by the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son and you must name him Jesus, because he is the one who is to save his people from their sins.’ Now all this took place to fulfil the words spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and they will call him Emmanuel,
a name which means ‘God-is-with-us.’ When Joseph woke up he did what the angel of the Lord had told him to do: he took his wife to his home.
REFLECTION:
The time is coming. God has come to be man like us. He comes to teach us how to be truly human, how to be truly who we are, to make us realize that each one of us is unique and that we are all called to accept our real selves, and not to imitate those ‘fake’ models or idols that we hold. Christmas time is a time to reflect that Jesus is only our real model in order to live a fully happy and satisfied life. Ask God for it, for nothing is impossible with him.

The Reason to Smile this Christmas

A Sunday School teacher asked the class, “who came, on camels, to see Baby Jesus”?  One of them  replied, “The 3 wise-guys!”  I didn’t know which way to turn.  I didn’t want to burst out laughing in their faces.

Here is the story:

THE CHRISTMAS PAGEANT

A lady who has been married for five years prayed that she would have a child. She promised that if she’s given a baby she would be a perfect mother to him, love him with  all her heart and raise him with God’s  word as her guide.

God answered her prayers
and blessed her with a son.

The next year God blessed her and her husband
with another son.

The following year,
He blessed them with
yet another son.

The year after that they
were blessed with a daughter.

Her husband thought they had
been blessed right into poverty.
They now had four children,
and the oldest was only
four years old.

She learned never to ask God
for anything unless she really meant it
As a minister once told her,
“If you pray for rain,
make sure you carry an umbrella.”

She began reading a few verses
of the Bible to the children
each day as they lay in their cribs..

She was off to a good start.
God had entrusted her
with four children and
she didn’t want to disappoint Him.

She tried to be patient the day
the children smashed
two dozen eggs on
the kitchen floor searching
for baby chicks.

She tried to be understanding… when they started a hotel for homeless frogs in the spare bedroom, although it took her nearly two hours to catch all twenty-three frogs.
When her daughter poured
ketchup all over herself and
rolled up in a blanket to see
how it felt to be a hot dog,
she tried to see the humor
rather than the mess..

In spite of changing over
twenty-five thousand diapers,
never eating a hot meal
and never sleeping for more
than thirty minutes at a time,
She still thanks God daily for my children.

While she couldn’t keep her promise
to be a perfect mother –
She didn’t even come close…
She did keep her promise
to raise them in the Word of God.

She knew she was missing the mark
just a little when she  told
her daughter they were going
to church to worship God,
and she wanted to bring
a bar of soap along to
“wash up” Jesus, too.

Something was lost
in the translation when
She explained that
God gave them everlasting life,
and her son thought it was
generous of God to give
them his “last wife.”

Her proudest moment came
during the children’s
Christmas pageant.

Her daughter was playing Mary,
two of my sons were shepherds
and her youngest son was a wise man.
This was their moment to shine.

Her five-year-old shepherd
had practiced his line,
“We found the babe wrapped
in swaddling clothes.”

But he was nervous and said,
“The baby was wrapped
in wrinkled clothes.”

Her four-year-old “Mary” said,
“That’s not ‘wrinkled clothes,’ silly.
That’s dirty, rotten clothes.”

A wrestling match broke out
between Mary and the shepherd
and was stopped by an angel,
who bent her halo and lost
her left wing

She slouched a little lower
in my seat when Mary
dropped the doll representing
Baby Jesus, and it bounced
down the aisle crying,
“Mama-mama.”

Mary grabbed the doll,
wrapped it back up
and held it tightly as
the wise men arrived.

Her  other son stepped forward
wearing a bathrobe
and a paper crown,
knelt at the manger
and announced,
“We are the three wise men,
and we are bringing gifts
of gold,
common sense
and fur.”

The congregation
dissolved into laughter,
and the pageant
got a standing ovation.

“I’ve never enjoyed a Christmas
program as much as this one,”
laughed the pastor,
wiping tears from his eyes

For the rest of my life,  she’ll never hear the Christmas story without thinking of
gold, common sense and fur.

“Her children are her pride
and her joy and her greatest
blessing,” She said as she dug
through her purse for an aspirin.

Jesus had no servants,
yet they called Him Master.

Had no degree,
yet they called Him Teacher
.

Had no medicines,
yet they called Him Healer.

Had no army,
yet kings feared Him.

He won no military battles,
yet He conquered the world.
He committed no crime,
yet they crucified Him.

He was buried in a tomb,
yet He lives today.

Feel honored
to serve such a Leader

who loves us.

GOD BLESS YOU ALL!
May you have a joyous and spiritual Christmas this year.Remember it is Jesus that is the reason…that we have this season.

Resting in Jesus

MOM’S EMPTY CHAIR

A woman’s daughter had asked the local minister
To come and pray with her mother.
When the minister arrived,
He found the woman lying in bed with her head
Propped up on two pillows.
An empty chair sat beside her bed.
The minister assumed that the woman
Had been informed of his visit…
‘I guess you were expecting me, he said.
‘No, who are you?’ said the mother.
The minister told her his name and then remarked,
‘I saw the empty chair and I figured you knew
I was going to show up..’
‘Oh yeah, the chair,’ said the bedridden woman
‘Would you mind closing the door?’
Puzzled, the minister shut the door.
‘I have never told anyone this,
Not even my daughter,’ said the woman.
‘But all of my life I have never
Known how to pray.
At church I used to hear the pastor talk about prayer,
But it went right over my head…’
I abandoned any attempt at prayer,’
The old woman continued, ‘
Until one day four years ago, my best friend said to me,
‘ Prayer is just a simple matter
Of having a conversation with Jesus.
Here is what I suggest..
‘Sit down in a chair;
Place an empty chair in front of you,
And in faith see Jesus on the chair.
It’s not spooky because he promised,
‘I will be with you always’…
‘Then just speak to him in the same way
You’re doing with me right now…’
‘So, I tried it and I’ve liked it so much
That I do it a couple of hours every day.
I’m careful though. If my daughter saw me talking
To an empty chair, she’d either have a nervous breakdown
Or send me off to the funny farm.’
The minister was deeply moved by the story and
Encouraged the old woman to continue on the journey.
Then he prayed with her, anointed her with oil,
And returned to the church.
Two nights later the daughter called
To tell the minister that her mama
Had died that afternoon.
Did she die in peace?’ he asked.
Yes, when I left the house about two o’clock,
She called me over to her bedside,
Told me she loved me and kissed me on the cheek.
When I got back from the store an hour later,
I found her .
But there was something strange about her death.
Apparently, just before Mom died,
She leaned over and rested her head on the chair
Beside the bed. What do you make of that?’
The minister wiped a tear from his eye and said,
‘I wish we could all go like that.’

Prayer is one of the best free gifts we receive.
I asked God for water, He gave me an ocean.*
I asked God for a flower, He gave me a garden.*
I asked God for a friend, He gave me all of YOU…
If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.
Happy moments, praise God.
Difficult moments, seek God.
Quiet moments, worship God
Painful moments, trust God.
Every moment, thank God.

Ryan’s Well: A beautiful Christmas Story

This Christmas season is a time of giving and sharing the gifts we have, a time to recall all our graces for the previous year, a time to thank God for all his gifts to us, and a time to welcome Jesus, the God made man who comes to us in the flesh, in order  to show us how to love God and one another. To celebrate this season let’s reflect on this beautiful real-life story of this young boy who has changed his own little world into a great place of love, care, sympathy and hope.

Ryan Hreljac, a grade 1 pupil in 1998, learned from his teacher, Mrs. Prest that people were dying because they didn’t have clean water to drink. He decided that raising money for those without access to water  was the right thing to do.
