Gospel for St Francis Xavier’s feast

Gospel Mark 16:15-20 © Jesus showed himself to the Eleven, and said to them: ‘Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation. He who believes and is baptised will be saved; he who does not believe will be condemned. These are the signs that will be associated with believers: in my name they will cast out devils; they will have the gift of tongues; they will pick up snakes in their hands, and be unharmed should they drink deadly poison; they will lay their hands on the sick, who will recover.’ And so the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven: there at the right hand of God he took his place, while they, going out, preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word by the signs that accompanied it.

REFLECTION:

Jesus has invited us to share his mission. But we have to get direction from him, and not from something else. Sometimes we tend to do something noble and good in the periphery, but is really not what Jesus wants us to do. So today,  let this be our prayer that Jesus would always be our sign, our way, our source of nourishment, our motivation, our message to the world. Christians let’s stand up for Jesus.

Bible [joke]

There was this Christian lady that had to do a lot of traveling for her business, so she did a lot of flying. But flying made her nervous so she always took her Bible along with her to read and it helped relax her.

One time, she was sitting next to a man. When he saw her pull out her Bible, he gave a little chuckle and went back to what he was doing. After awhile he turned to her and asked, “You don’t really believe all that stuff in there do you?”

The lady replied, “Of course I do. It is the Bible.”

He said, “Well what about that guy that was swallowed by that whale?” She replied “Oh, Jonah. Yes I believe that, it is in the Bible.” He asked, “Well, how do you suppose he survived all that time inside the whale?”

The lady said, “Well I don’t  really know. I guess when I get to heaven I will ask him.”

“What if he isn’t in heaven but in hell because he disobeyed God once?” the man asked sarcastically. “Then you can ask him,” replied the lady.

St Andrew the Apostle feast

He was born in Bethsaida, in Galilee, and worked as a fisherman. He may have been a disciple of St John the Baptist. He became one of the first to follow Jesus and introduced his brother, Simon Peter, to him. As one of the twelve Apostles he was widely venerated in ancient times, and became patron saint of Scotland because according to legend some of his bones were brought there and buried at the place where the town of St Andrew’s now stands.

Gospel Matthew 4:18-22 ©
As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, Jesus saw two brothers, Simon, who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew; they were making a cast in the lake with their net, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.’ And they left their nets at once and followed him. Going on from there he saw another pair of brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John; they were in their boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. At once, leaving the boat and their father, they followed him.

Reflection: Like St Andrew, are we willing to leave everything behind if Jesus invites us to follow him?
